The Drakensberg mountains continue south of Lesotho into South Africa. So the next day, after a nice bush camp near a river, I carried on my way on small gravel roads amongst these mountains. After the next escarpment, in Hogsback, the landscape is temporary lush, and the road passes through 15 kilometres of canopy forest. Locals have set up some nice view points. But the big speciality of South Africa is the fencing, any single piece of land and all roads are bordered by never-ending fences. I rode to the indian ocean coast again, at Jeffrey's bay, a very popular surffer spot... ...and then followed a part of the 'garden route', running between the ocean and the mountains up to cape town. After 200 km, I left this touristic road to ride some passes on the Swartberg mountains. I spent the night in Calitzdorp, in an old train station converted into a nice camping. Then rode in the middle of the winelands of South Africa... ...and eventualy reached cap Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa (cape of good hope is more famous but not as south). Despite its proximity to the crowded city of Cape Town, this part of the coast feels still remote and wild. I stopped a couple of days in Hermanus, being invited by Hazel and Albie, who i met in Jordan 5 months before !! Hermanus is said to be the best place on earth to spot whale. Even if it was not the season, i saw some of them, along with dolphins, seals... ... and pinguins. I eventualy reached Cape Town and stayed at James' (who was also traveling through Africa, we met in egypt and he had reached Cape town some weeks before me) a couple of cloudy / rainy days. |
