Back in Belem, I have to find a boat that can take me to Macapa, on the other side of the Amazon delta, some 350 km north west, in order to eventually reach the french guyana. During these few days, I visit the old center of the city around the port and the fort, and some natural areas that can be found even inside the city, filled with animals from the jungle. This time, I go on a passenger boat which has a few spots for cars. It goes through the maze of small water channels of the amazon delta. When passing near villages, small boats approach to sell stuff or to exchange passengers. Macapa looked like a nice city, but I spend little time there, only to visit the sea front and the fort. Then, 500 km of mainly good road lead to what is decribed as the only land border between Europe and America, actually Brazil and french guyana. Once in french guyana, I visit some of the many prisons that has been built in the 19th century, and try to spot some sea turtles. |
